About the Organization:

At the Equal Rights Trust, we work in partnership to advance equality through the law. We support civil society organisations and lawyers around the world in their efforts to secure the adoption and implementation of anti-discrimination laws and we collaborate with international partners to develop understanding of the role of equality laws in areas ranging from the fight against corruption to the regulation of artificial intelligence.

This is an exciting time for us. In late 2022, following a three-year partnership with the UN Human Rights Office, we launched the Practical Guide to the Development of Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Legislation, the first definitive United Nations guidance on the laws which States must pass to meet their non-discrimination obligations in international law. In 2023, we will launch a new strategy to support those working to adopt these laws; strengthen the enforcement and implementation of equality laws; and develop equality law in response to new and emerging challenges. To help us deliver this new strategy, we are seeking to expand our team, grow our network and increase our impact.

About the role

Our new Researcher will play a central role in delivering the Equal Rights Trust’s mission to support those working to advance equality through the law. The post-holder will work closely with our experienced Head of Research, supporting the development and delivery of a diverse range of research projects and initiatives and responding to the needs and demands of our partners. The role will include:

  • Undertaking legal and policy research and developing and drafting research reports;
  • Undertaking legal analysis and drafting legal briefs and advocacy submissions;
  • Developing and designing research plans, methodologies and guidelines;
  • Developing and providing training for research consultants, fellows and partners;
  • Coordinating the work of research consultants, fellows and partners;
  • Collating and analysing the findings of qualitative and quantitative research;
  • Assisting with designing research initiatives, and developing proposals for funding;
  • Managing the delivery of a number of projects and initiatives, under supervision;
  • Other tasks as required from time to time.


This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with an interest in advancing equality and combating discrimination to put their skills and experience to use. We’re looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:


  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in law (preferred) or other relevant discipline;
  • Knowledge of international human rights and / or equality law;
  • Knowledge and understanding of qualitative and / or quantitative research methodologies;
  • Experience of developing and producing high quality research reports for publication;
  • Experience in undertaking legal research and analysis;
  • Experience in a role which requires co-ordination of multiple workstreams concurrently;
  • Fluent written and spoken English and the ability to produce high quality written material;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills;
  • Excellent IT skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail with proofreading and editing experience.


  • A graduate degree in law and / or legal qualification;
  • Experience working in an international human rights organisation;
  • Experience of project design and management;
  • Experience of fundraising and income generation activities;
  • Fluency in other United Nations working languages a distinct advantage.
